Listen to Audio Reading: | Organic on a Budget? We were Organic because of the Budget! |
People complain about the cost of Organic Foods, but they still buy it to enjoy the benefits of eating organically.
Organic foods don't have to cost a fortune & we should know... We lived Organically because of a tight Budget!
Do-it-yourself Organic Living can also help to prevent excessive future Anxiety for your children.
Anxiety Prevention with Budget Friendly Do-it-Yourself Organic Living
Chronic Anxiety consists of Fears which are often centered around Survival. Having enough food to eat is at the top of any survival list.
Many young people today believe food comes from the grocery store, many don't know that milk, butter & cheese come from cows or that eggs come from chickens. Believe it or not, many of these children don't know that apples, oranges & bananas grow on trees or that other vegetables grow from plants. All foods are just packaged items in the store or at the restaurant, leaving them to feel that their survival depends upon civilization.
They sense their own inability to survive without the modern conveniences which can easily disappear in times of natural disaster.
The Solution:
Teach Children How to Naturally Grow, Gather & Store Food.
We grew, raised, fished, hunted & gathered most of our own food. On our little hobby farm we milked cows by hand, made butter with a hand-crank butter churn twice a day, gathered the brown or green-shelled eggs our chickens layed. We even made our own ice cream with ice from the frozen river, not from a bag at the gas station.
We purchased very little of our "organic" food.
The store provided pasta, flour, yeast, sugar & chocolate chips. Chocolate is a necessity after all. ❤
We canned pickles, beats, tomatoes, green beans, chicken, venison, corn, etc. Potatoes kept for a long time in our cool, dark cellar. We also froze much of our food.
We walked through the woods often, always enjoyable & even better if we found some edible mushrooms, berries or asparagus.
Even in Minnesota, someone devoting two hours a week could collect 200-pounds of edible mushrooms per year. These can be dried for year round consumption.
Cattail stalks, when pealed, taste & look just like fresh cucumbers. Their roots in the fall are also similar to rutabagas or potatoes.
Raise Confident & Capable Children: Teach Children to Provide the Meal
This was my childhood & even though I haven't taken the time to grow a full vegetable garden in many years... with all those years of practice, will always remember how. Thoughts of living like this can't feel scary when you've already done it.
Returning to the woods seems a peaceful day of enjoyment, as nature has always been my loving provider & my home.
Those who teased me for living this way were teased right back with my usual reply, "If the crap hit the fan... Who do you know for sure could survive?"
Their laughter turns serious as they realize the answer, which has often been, "You are the only person I know who knows how to do it."
That's right... I AM. Thanks to my Mom for all the "survival training" while raising me organically long before Organic was ever cool. :)
